BRANDON, FLORIDA REPEATS IN NHSCA SUNSHINE INVITATIONAL

BRANDON, FL - Host Brandon High, ranked No. 14 nationally by W.I.N. magazine, crowned eight individual champions and captured their second straight team title in the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) Sunshine Invitational here December 12-13.

The Eagles scored 633 points to win the title over Vestavia Hills (AL) High. The Rebels, winners of 12 Alabama state titles, scored 482 points for their second consecutive runnerup finish. Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas High scored 440 points to finish third in the 10-team tournament, which consisted of nine rounds. Vernal (Utah) Uintah High scored 403 points and finished fourth. Every wrestler at each weight class met each of his opponents from opposing schools.

Brandon junior Joe Cozart (145), a two-time state champion, was voted the meet's Outstanding Wrestler for the second consecutive year. Cozart edged Alabama state champion Marty Carlson of Vestavia Hills 8-7 in the final match for both wrestlers. Cozart was joined by teammates Ryan Renkey (112), Rossi Bruno (119), Tyler Liberatore (125), Eric Grajales (135), Kevin Timothy (140), Kyle Koziel (160) and Zaq Berridge (189) as champions. Timothy also made a strong bid for Outstanding Wrestler honors, winning all nine of his matches by technical fall.

Florida wrestlers claimed 13 of the 14 individual titles. St. Thomas Aquinas crowned a pair of champions, freshman Geordan Speiller (152), who claimed his title with a 3-2 decision over Brandon's Wally Figaro, and junior Paul Weiss (171). Lakeland George Jenkins High also had a pair of champions, Tyler Smith (103) and Trevor Brown (215).
