CAPE HENLOPEN HIGH SCHOOL READY FOR FESTIVAL
December 20, 2009

Cape Henlopen High School’s basketball team is made up of lively, energetic, and talented players. They are 2-2 early in the season. Jaron Dukes, one of the lead contributors to the team, is averaging 14 points per game. Trent Batson is leading in blocks. Paris White is a first-year player on Varsity and is doing an outstanding job adjusting to the role as a starter. Andrew Merlo is an all-around performer on both offense and defense.

“This is a rebuilding year for us. However, we think that this year’s team can achieve the success that Cape’s basketball teams have had in the past. It will take a little longer to grasp all of the principles of our system,” says Coach Dwight Tingle. "They are looking forward to the Christmas tournament. It is their first year in the tournament and Coach Tingle feels that it is an honor to finally be able to be a part of it."

Andrew Merlo is definitely pumped for the tournament. “To prepare, we’ve been doing a lot of running and getting ready physically as well as mentally. I’m really excited for the tournament!”

RICK BARRY TO ATTEND NHSCA BASKETBALL FESTIVAL
December 19, 2009

NBA Hall of Famer, Rick Barry, will be at the Wicomico Civic Center on Wednesday, December 30th, supporting the NHSCA High School Basketball Festival. Rick will be in attendance during the evening session from 5:45pm to 10:30pm.

Barry, who was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987 is the only player ever to lead the NCAA, NBA, and the ABA in scoring. He scored more then 25,000 points in his professional career and in four different seasons averaged more then 30 points per game. He was named to 12 All-Star teams, four All-NBA First Teams, and five All-ABA First Teams.

Rick Barry

After winning the NBA Championship in 1975, Barry was awarded the NBA Finals MVP award for helping the Golden State Warriors sweep the Washington Bullets in four games. In 1996, Barry was named to the NBA’s 50th Anniversary All-Time Team.

Bobby Ferraro Jr, the Executive Director of the NHSCA, said “It’s an honor and pleasure to have a man of Rick’s stature to represent the NHSCA and to be on hand for the final day of the NHSCA Basketball Festival. We are very honored to have him aboard with us and we believe the athletes and coaches will really enjoy his presence.”

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Barry was mentioned mainly as the father of four talented college and professional players. Scooter Barry played for the University of Kansas and then in the Continental Basketball Association; Jon played for Georgia Tech and various NBA teams. Barry's second youngest son, Drew, played for Georgia Tech, and the youngest son, Brent, played at Oregon State and entered the NBA as the 15th overall selection of the 1995 Draft by the Denver Nuggets although his draft rights were traded to the Los Angeles Clippers.

"To be a part of the NHSCA Basketball Festival is distinct honor and pleasure.  Any time I can be involved in the betterment and promotion of basketball, the game I truly love, I am thrilled.  Giving young people the opportunity to showcase their talents is a wonderful undertaking.  I also respect and admire the coaches who make this all happen.  Without the commitment and dedication of the coaching fraternity, none of this would be possible.  I look forward to meeting the coaches and players participating in this year's festival,” said Barry.

Barry will be attending the National High School Coaches Association Basketball Festival that will be running from December 26th to December 30th at the Wicomico Civic Center in Salisbury, MD. In conjunction with the Wicomico Civic Center, the NHSCA Basketball Festival will feature twenty-nine teams from the Maryland area will be competing during the five day event. Barry will be at the Wicomico Civic Center during the night session on December 30th, to talk with players and coaches and signing autographs for those in attendance.

One of the most anticipated seasons of this 2009 athletic year is mens varsity basketball. The team looks to bounce back from previous losing seasons and make a run for the Bayside championship.

Head Coach Travis Lloyd is returning for his fourth year and is as excited about the new season as his players are.

“Our new players come from winning basketball programs and we hope their previous success can rub off on us,” Lloyd commented.

The Seahawks brought in four bene?cial transfers who will suit up alongside several other tenured players. Seniors Cedric Johnson, Mark Engle, Montré Andrews, and junior Draequon Smith were welcomed with open arms as they are all talented additions.

Johnson, who transferred from St. John’s Catholic Prep High School this year, will start at point guard. At St. John’s, Johnson achieved several awards including First Team All Conference, team MVP, and he statistically racked up the most assists in his conference. Recruited now by Bloomsburg, Loyola, and Virginia Union, Johnson has plans on extending his basketball career into the collegiate world.

Starting at shooting guard is Engle, who played for Delmarva Christian High School last year. Andrews, an addition from Indian River High School, is the starting power forward.

Junior Tré Foreman has worn blue and white his entire high school career as he starts in his third consecutive year at small forward. Foreman will bring leadership and generate chemistry on the court.

Much needed height is brought to the team from senior Tom Lubeski, who starts at center and towers over the competition at 6’10. Lubeski excels at retrieving rebounds and blocking shots. A possible Naval Academy recruit, Lubeski will be the defensive force Decatur has been shooting for in the past few years.

The team’s undisputed goal is to improve on the 8-14 record of last year. Coach Lloyd believes a good defense, superb ball handling, and the players’ ability to work well together are the keys to success. Lloyd notes his group needs to stay focused on each ensuing game until it is played, throughout the entire season. “Our ?rst game is the most important until the next one,” he said.

If preseason is any predictor, the Seahawks are looking good. A November playday held at Sussex Tech ended with a perfect 3-0 for the ballers. The pre-season tournament invited teams from Delaware and Maryland, including WiHi, North Caroline, Woodbridge, and Seaford. Decatur looked quick and their press caused a lot of problems for their opponents. The Pocomoke Warriors and the Snow Hill Eagles are considered to be Decatur’s toughest tests in the Bayside South. The
Seahawks’ ?rst game against the Eagles on December 15 will be a reunion for Smith and his former teammates, which will only intensify the match up.

Other scheduled tournaments, such as the National High School Coaches Association Basketball Festival during the holiday break, will give Decatur some different challenges on the season.

Foreman knows this team is much better than ones of the past; however, he will not approach the season complacently, stating “we are ready; we’re pumped!
