BLAIR ACADEMY GOES 3-0 IN NHSCA HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING FESTIVAL; NORTHAMPTON WINS FOUR MATCHES

EASTON, Pa. – A total of 19 varsity and junior varsity teams from five states – New Jersey, Massachusetts and host Pennsylvania – competed in the ninth annual National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) High School Wrestling Festival Jan. 16 at Pleasant Valley High School in Brodheadsville, Pa.

Blairstown Township (N.J.) Blair Academy, ranked No. 1 nationally, tuned up for this weekend’s NHSCA Final Four by winning three meets. The Bucs beat Tunkhannock High 60-6, Stroudsburg High 59-16 and Northampton 51-14. Blair dropped just four contested matches in its three duals.

“We saw many great matches at this year’s event,” NHSCA executive director Bob Ferraro Jr. said. “Teams like Pleasant Valley, Blair Academy and Northampton showed why they are so highly regarded. These teams have a great opportunity to get tough competition against teams from other states, and get experience for both their varsity and junior varsity wrestlers. All of them will benefit from a day of great competition.”

Two other schools, East Stroudsburg South High and Holmdel (N.J.) St. John Vianney High, also were unbeaten in the event, posting 2-0 records. East Stroudsburg South beat Warrington Central Bucks South High 45-21 and Doylestown Central Bucks East High, 33-23. St. John Vianney also beat Central Bucks East, 39-30, then turned back East Stroudsburg North High, 44-33.

Northampton, the only school in the field to wrestle five matches on the day, finished 4-1. Prior to their day-ending loss to Blair Academy, the Konkrete Kids won their first four duals, 55-11 over Doylestown Central Bucks West High, 40-21 over St. Augustine Prep, 61-12 over Swiftwater Pocono Mountain East High and 33-27 over Pleasant Valley.

Tyler Marx (171-189) finished a perfect 5-0 for Northampton and three of his teammates added 4-1 records: Greg Rinker (112), Austin Sommer (152-160) and Tyler Marx (171-189).

Pleasant Valley, led by its tough lower weights, rolled past Souderton High 56-15, Warminster Archbishop Wood High 72-10 and Richland (N.J.) St. Augustine Prep 37-24 in its first three matches before falling to Northampton.

Six Bears posted perfect 4-0 records: Ernest Klingel (112), Mike Dahlstrom (119), Alex Yanovich (125), Jordan Toledo (130), Mike Pokrinchak (135-140) and Jake Chamberlain (140-145).

Dec. 26-30. The NHSCA selects Coaches and Senior Athletes of the Year in 20 boys and girls sports, and sponsors more than two dozen national championship events in 11 sports.

In partnership with Navy Special Operations, the NHSCA conducts the Navy SEAL Fitness Challenge in 1,200 high schools throughout America. This serves as a replacement for President Kennedy’s Council on Fitness that was popular in the 1970’s and 1980’s. In partnership with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, the NHSCA conducts Character and Leadership Workshops and reach more than 800 Pennsylvania high schools and 9,600 athletes and coaches.

The NHSCA also has entered a sponsorship agreement with the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) for the state football and wrestling championships. Check the Web sites of the NHSCA and the PIAA for more details as they are announced.
