BLAIR ACADEMY GOES 4-0 AT NHSCA FINAL FOUR; COLLINS HILL (GA.) ALSO IMPRESSES

EASTON, Pa. – The nation’s top-ranked team, Blairstown Township (N.J.) Blair Academy, survived a second-round scare from newcomer Suwanee (Ga.) Collins Hill High and went on to post a 4-0 record in the 13th annual National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) Final Four of High School Wrestling Jan. 23 at Shawnee Junior High School.

“This year’s Final Four was the best yet,” NHSCA executive director Bob Ferraro Jr. said. “All of the teams were very impressive, and there were a lot of close bouts in every match. It was a great day for wrestling fans.”

The event featured five teams ranked nationally by WIN magazine – the top-ranked Bucs, No. 14 Collins Hill, No. 19 Dallas (Texas) Bishop Lynch High, No. 21 Sussex (N.J.) High Point Regional High and No. 24 Long Branch (N.J.) High. The magazine’s rankings held up throughout the day…but not without some tense moments.

After easing past Long Branch 27-22 in the opening round, Collins Hill stunned Blair Academy by scoring four pins in a 33-30 loss that had the crowd on the edge of their seats. Blair had just two pins, but it was their ability to win the close matches – the Bucs scored a pair of one-point victories and a two-point win – as they scored an 8-6 edge in victories. Austin Ormsbee (140), Chris Villalonga (145), Jesse Shanaman (152) and Brad Bishop (160) posted consecutive middle-weight wins for Blair.

Blair also beat Benton High, 43-25, Long Branch, 42-18 and Bishop Lynch, 46-15, the final match a battle between 3-0 teams. After beating Benton 54-25, Collins Hill silenced a partisan Red Rovers crowd in the final round, holding the host team to just three victories in 14 bouts to win 45-12.

High Point and Long Branch, New Jersey’s top two public-school teams, went 2-1 and 1-2, respectively, in the event. Easton finished with a 1-3 record and Benton and Franklin (Mass.) High finished 0-3.

Ormsbee, Villalonga and Shanaman were joined by Mark Grey (119) and Mike Evans (189) with 4-0 records for Blair and Evan Silver (112) was 3-0. Collins Hill had three wrestlers with 4-0 records: Drew Ferguson (103), T.J. Mitchell (125) and C.J. Collins (215).

Also posting 4-0 records: Bishop Lynch’s Chris Mears (145) and Tanner Eitel (171) and Easton’s Mitchell Minotti (130) and Mark Hartenstine (140-145).

Four High Point wrestlers went 3-0 in the event: Nick Francavilla (119), Ethan Orr 9152), Billy Smith (215) and Trevor Papenmeier (275). Long Branch’s Andrew Cornell (130) and Omar Akel (171) also went 3-0.
