NEW YORK WINS JUNIORS TEAM TITLE WITH 4 CHAMPIONS; COX VOTED OUTSTANDING WRESTLER
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - With four individual champions, New York won the state team title in the NHSCA National High School Junior Wrestling Championships presented by the U.S. Navy, which concluded tonight at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.
The All-American round capped a tournament that saw the Juniors Championship set a record with 859 competitors from 42 states. The finals featured an outstanding field, with 18 of the 28 finalists owning at least one state title in their careers. A four-time state champion and three three-time state champions took home titles, and seven of the finals matched state champions.
The National High School Seniors Wrestling Championships resumed Saturday with 818 wrestlers from 48 states and Europe competing. That competition began with the championship round of 16 and the opening consolation rounds.
New York, which advanced six to the finals, scored 266.5 points, with Pennsylvania (222.5) finishing second. California (209) finished third, with Ohio (200) and Missouri (175.5) rounding out the top five.
Two of New York's champions, Kyle Dake (130) of Lansing High and Ken Altarac (285) of Troy LaSalle Institute, were National Sophomores champions a year ago. Dake scored the winning takedown at the buzzer for a stunning 3-2 victory over New Jersey state runnerup Kodie Silvestri of Hamburg Wallkill Valley High. In a battle of state champions, Altarac rode out Eloheim Palma of Cary (NC) High in a 2-1 tie-breaker victory. Three-time Division 2 state champion Alex Ekstrom (135) of Palmyra-Macedon High and Christian Boley (189) of Brockport High were New York's other champions.
Defending National Sophomores champions met in the 160-pound final. Three-time state champion Ethen Lofthouse of Hyrum (UT) Mountain Crest High broke a 1-1 tie with a takedown with 37 seconds remaining for a 3-2 victory over state champion Ryan LeBlanc of Morrisville-Eaton (NY) High. Lofthouse won at 152 pounds last year, LeBlanc at 160. The fourth National Sophomores champion to repeat was two-time state placewinner Jimmy Sheptock (152) of Northampton (PA) High.
Three-time Class 4A state champion Tyler Cox (112) of Gillette (WY) Campbell County High was voted the meet's Outstanding Wrestler. Cox scored the match's only takedown midway through the third period to beat two-time Missouri champion Ryan Mango of St. Louis Whitfield School 3-1 in a match filled with flurries.
Ohio had back-to-back champions, Zach Neibert (119) of St. Paris Graham High and Jacob Vaughan (125) of Columbus St. Francis de Sales. At 140, four-time New Mexico champion Max Ortega of Rio Rancho High, a National Sophomore runnerup last season, moved up to the top spot by shutting out Kyle Lang of Broadview Heights (OH) Brecksville High 3-0.
Also winning titles were Avi Friedman (103) of Owings Mills (MD) High, Matt Lester (145) of Eureka (MO) High, Edward Ruth (171) of Harrisburg (PA) Susquehanna Township High and two-time Nebraska champion Kevin Barrett (215) of Boys Town School.
The National High School Juniors Wrestling Championships is an open event, and is open to any high-school wrestler completing his junior year. More than three-quarters of the wrestlers qualified for their high school state tournament at least once. More than half are state placewinners, and nearly 20 per cent have won a state title.
