The 2009 High School Senior Nationals produced some unbelievable talent that is sure to make major waves at the College level in the coming years.

A springboard to greatness... NHSCA National Championship Events have seen hundreds of its participants enjoy illustrious college careers. Many NCAA champions and All-Americans and USA Olympians have competed in NHSCA National Championship Events when they were in high school. In the 2009 NCAA Division I Finals, 9 of the 10 NCAA Champions wrestled in the NHSCA Senior Nationals their senior year. On average NHSCA Senior Nationals alumni make an average of 18 of the 20 NCAA Division I National Wrestling Championship finals appearances each year.... and they win an average of 9 of the 10 titles. 74 of the 80 2009 NCAA All Americans competed here when they were high school seniors.

Accept no substitute... Modeled after the NCAA Division I Championship, the NHSCA High School Nationals Wrestling Championship affords you the very best competition in the country and best chance to be noticed by college coaches. A showcase for college recruiting... Every college wrestling coach in the country has been invited to attend this event. Past events have served as tremendous showcases of recruiting for the college coach. Last year, over 221 college and university wrestling coaches attended the event. CALIFORNIA WINS NATIONAL SENIORS TEAM TITLE; KANSAS'S NAPIER VOTED OUTSTANDING WRESTLER

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - With a 1-2-3 finish at 112 pounds and 16 All-Americans, California won the state team title in the 20th annual NHSCA National High School Junior Wrestling Championships presented by the U.S. Navy, which concluded April 5 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.

State runnerup Esteban Cabanas of Moreno Valley Canyon Springs High won the 112-pound title as California scored 186.5 points to capture the Chase Metcalf Memorial state team trophy for the second time in three years and fifth time in the history of the tournament. New York edged Michigan, 177.5-170, for second place, while Pennsylvania edged defending champion New Jersey, 162.5-161, for fourth place to complete the top five.

Cabanas edged Madison Gambrell of Clovis High, 5-2 in an all-California final. Gambrell, eighth in state as a junior, didn't compete in the state meet this year. The two were California's only finalists. Bryden Lazaro of Sacramento Bella Vista High, a California state qualifier this year, added a third-place finish to complete the California sweep.

Michigan, New Jersey and host Virginia each had two champions. Both of New Jersey's champions were from Blairstown Township Blair Academy, Sean Boyle (119) and Edward Ruth (171). Boyle scored victories over three nationally-ranked wrestlers to win his title, including a 9-2 finals over four-time Wyoming champion Tyler Cox of Gillette Campbell County High. Cox was the Outstanding Wrestler in the NHSCA National Juniors a year ago.

Ruth, the National Prep champion this year, prevailed in one of the most anticipated matches of the finals, 9-3 over four-time Utah champion Ethen Lofthouse of Hyrum Mountain Crest High in a battle of returning National Juniors champions. Ruth won at the same weight weight last year, Lofthouse, also a National Sophomores champion, at 160. The two had met previously in the semifinals of the Walsh Ironman Tournament in December, a match Ruth also won by a 3-2 score.

Defending National Juniors champions also met in the 140-pound final, with Kyle Dake (140) of Lansing (NY.) High beating five-time New Mexico champion Max Ortega of Rio Rancho High 5-2 to give him championships in the Sophomore, Junior and Senior Nationals. Dake won at 130 pounds last year, Ortega at 140.

Michigan's champions were Brenan Lyon (103) of Ithaca High, an unbeaten state champion this year, and Daniel Yates (160) of Hesperia High. A three-time state champion in Michigan's smallest class, Division 4, Yates prevailed in a star-studded weight, recoding consecutive victories of 6-2 over Ohio champion Kyle Lang of Broadview Heights Brecksville High in the quarterfinals, 7-6 over National Prep champion Turtogtokh Luvsandorj of Newark (NJ) St. Benedict's Prep in the semifinals and 5-1 over Iowa champion John Nicholson of Des Moines Roosevelt High.

Virginia got titles from Michael Garofalo (125) of Stafford Colonial Forge High and Derrick Borlie (189) of Winchester Millbrook High.

Three-time Kansas champion C.J. Napier (135) of Columbus High was voted the recipient of the Jeff Reese Memorial Award as the meet's Outstanding Wrestler after prevailing in six action-filled matches by a combined total of just 16 points. The University of Nebraska recruit capped the meet with a 7-3 overtime victory over four-time New York champion Ian Paddock of Warsaw High. Kansas claimed two of the top three spots in the weight class as two-time state champion Kendric Maple of Wichita Heights High, who fell 7-2 to Paddock in the semifinals, finished third.

Also winning titles were Dale Shull (130) of Fort Lupton (CO) High, Joey Napoli (145) of Mechanicsburg (PA) Cumberland Valley High, Cody Compton (152) of Bonne Terre (MO) North County High, Tony Nelson (215) of Cambridge (MN) Cambridge-Isanti High and Eloheim Palma (285) of cary (NC) High. Mike Grillakis of Nashua (NH) South High, the eighth-place finisher at 215, won the Craig Wesner Memorial Award for the most falls, scoring four pins in a combined 6:26.
